Nau Keti Keta

http://kreedaakaushalya.blogspot.com/2010/05/how-to-play-nau-keti-keta.html

Lau kata kati is a two-player abstract strategy game from India, specifically from Lower Bengal, and also from United Provinces, Karwi Subdivision where it is called Kowwu Dunki.[1] The game is related to draughts and even more so to Alquerque. Pieces are captured by leaping over them. The board is a pattern of two triangles joined together at a common vertex with further lines subdividing them. It is the same game as Butterfly (game) from Mozambique, which suggests a historical connection between the two games. Lau kata kati belongs to a specific category of games called Indian War-games, and the other games in this category are Dash-guti, Egara-guti, Pretwa, Gol-skuish.[1] All Indian War-games have one important thing in common, and that is that all the pieces are laid out on the patterned board, with only one vacant point in the center.[1] This forces the first move to be played on the central point, and captured by the other player's piece.[1]
It is important to realize that Lau kata kati's patterned board is the basis of other games, in particular, Dash-guti and Egara-guti, as the boards of those two games are an expansion. It serves as a basis for other games in the same way that the standard Alquerque board and the draughts board is a basis for other games.

The Golden Girl of Indian Chess - Divya Deshmukh

Divya Deshmukh

by Shahid Ahmed - 18/09/2017

When WFM Divya Deshmukh was asked, "What are your future plans in chess?", she replied, "I have no plans!" The girl just loves playing chess and this is reflected in her performances! She doesn't need any external motivation like Elo, medals or prizes to keep her going. No wonder, she has won 14 gold medals at international level for India at just the tender age of 12 years! Recently she won the gold in world cadets under-12 in Brazil, and ChessBase India's Shahid Ahmed caught up with her for a Skype Interview! We also speak with her father. We hope that through this interview you get to know Divya better, because we are sure you going to hear a lot about her in the near future.

Ashtapada

Ashtāpada (Sanskrit: अष्टापद) or Ashtapadi is an Indian board game which predates chess and was mentioned on the list of games that Gautama Buddha would not play. Chaturanga, which could be played on the same board, appeared sometime around the 6th century in India. It[which?] could be played by two to four participants.Variants played on different boards include Daśapada (Sanskrit: दशपद). and, in Gujarat, Chomal Ishto or Chomal Eshto . Similar traditional games can be found in China and Korea.

Etymology

The word Ashtāpada is a Sanskrit term describing the eight-by-eight board that the game is played on. This meaning was first recorded by Patanjali in a Mahābhāshya book written in the 2nd century. The game came to be ordered to work Brahmin Sutrakrilānga.

Paramapadham (பரமபதம்) [Thayam (தாயம்)]

Paramapadham (Thayam) is Snakes and Ladders in English; it was created in ancient India before 1892. It is also known as Parama Pada Sopanam means Steps to the Highest Place (where Parama Pada means highest place and Sopanam means steps). Paramapadham was inspired by religion; and was believed to be symbolic of a man's attempt to reach God. The ladders represent virtues and the snakes represent vices. The snakes carry names linking them to stories from our epics.
